Art Museum announces Young Artist Show: High School Division winners
By Elizabeth Dailing, Education Director, Rockford Art Museum
Each year, the Young Artist Show: High School Division gives us the opportunity to showcase the work of students within a 40-mile radius of Rockford Art Museum (RAM). Schools participating can be public, private, parochial or home schools.
This year, 22 high schools submitted pieces to be considered for jury into the exhibition. With more than 800 pieces of artwork submitted overall, the jurors had their work cut out for them. The pieces that will be shown in the 68th Young Artist Show: High School Division display an amazing amount of talent and creativity by high school art students in our region.
In the end, 200 pieces of artwork were juried into the show. From graphite to stop-animation pieces, the variety of artwork is something students in our region should be very proud of. It always amazes me, each year, at the talent and potential students in our area have.
The 68th Young Artist Show opens from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 15. Admission is FREE. Come and take a look at the work students in our community are producing.
The High School Division also has a number of awards—some monetary, some not—that come with the exhibition's opening March 15. Awards will be given to chosen students at 2 p.m. The award winners this year come from seven different schools and are as follows:
Portfolio Scholarship Award: Maria Ludeke, Boylan Catholic High School, senior, Rockford.
Myrtle M. Irons Scholarship Award: Allison Kenny, Boylan Catholic High School, senior, Rockford.
Best of Show: Sasha Spataro, Boylan Catholic High School, senior, Rockford.

Staff Choice: Staci Olson, East High School, junior, Rockford; and Kelsey Owen, Harlem High School, senior, Machesney Park.

So, I encourage you to come and take a look. If you have an eighth-grader, bring them by to see what projects they could aspire to if they are considering taking art in high school.
If you're an art enthusiast—come and be inspired by the work being done by students in our community. If you're an educator—come see how expression through visual art can enhance a student's understanding of the world.
And finally, if you have no connection to art or high school students—come see the show and see the amazing talent and futures that lie ahead for these students.
The 68th Young Artist Show: High School Division will be on display at Rockford Art Museum, in Anderson Gallery, March 15-April 19. The juried High School Division is followed by the Youth Division, which includes artwork from students in grades K-8 in Winnebago County.
