RAM Talks Art: Leadership Day at Rockford Art Museum

By Elizabeth Dailing, Education Director, Rockford Art Museum

Post-secondary education is a daunting prospect for high school students, as well as individuals considering going back to school after being in the workforce for some time. This is a critical issue in Rockford, and we're attempting to alleviate some of the burden for those students interested in a career in the arts.

“Leadership in the Arts: Resource and Career Day” at Rockford Art Museum (RAM) gives students a chance to meet with representatives from art programs in the region and beyond. With high gas prices (even though on the decline) and a faltering economy—we're saving you some trips by bringing the schools to you.

Monday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can come, for FREE, to RAM with their portfolios and questions to gather information about admission to the following schools:

Columbia College Chicago
Iowa State University
Millikin University
Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design
Northern Illinois University
Rock Valley College
School of the Art Institute in Chicago
Southern Illinois University
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Students at a community college looking to make the move to a four-year program in art—or those considering going back to school to pursue an art degree—can also utilize Leadership Day. You know who you are!

Another issue facing students starting the application process for college is the new requirements for service hours that many schools request. In response to that issue, we will have the Rockford Park District and Rockford Area Arts Council present at Leadership Day, too. There are so many volunteer opportunities right here in our community that students can find out about.

And, if that's not enough, we will also have a table dedicated to internships available right here at RAM. For many students, an internship provides the “real world” guidance that helps declare a major. On a personal note, if I hadn't had internships throughout college, I know I would have missed a huge part of what helped guide my career path.

So, take some time Monday, Nov. 10, to come to Leadership Day @ RAM. Parents are welcome, maybe to students' dismay! But they have questions, too, so we'd like you to take advantage of all these great schools being right here in Rockford for a day.

If you have questions, call me at (815) 972-2880. And I hope to see all of those art students in the area at Leadership Day!
