Artists’ Ensemble Theater (AE), in partnership with Rockford Art Museum (RAM), presents a memorable one-night-only performance of Tony Award-winning play Red on Friday, March 31, at RAM, 711 N. Main St., Rockford. Tickets are $30 and available through the Artists’ Ensemble Theater Box Office.

Directed by AE Artistic Director Richard Raether, Artists’ Ensemble members Stephen F. Vrtol III and David A. Gingerich perform this memorable one-night-only stage reading of Red by John Logan, with an introduction by Rockford Art Museum Curator Carrie Johnson on the work of painter Mark Rothko, subject of the play. A brief audience Q&A and informal reception immediately follow.

"John Logan's taut, visceral two-hander, Red, features artist Mark Rothko at the height of his career. Viewed through the lens of his youthful new assistant, Ken, we witness Rothko at the pinnacle of his creativity, but struggling through the creation of a series of large paintings, commissioned to be featured in New York’s brand-new Four Seasons Restaurant. As Ken and Rothko paint, they challenge each other to ask big questions about art: what it takes to create it and what its role should be in the world. Set in the 1950s, and based on a series of real events, Red takes a compelling look at the ever-changing relationship between an artist and his creations."—stageagent.com

"Intense and exciting ... a study in artist appreciation, a portrait of an angry and brilliant mind that asks you to feel the shape and texture of thoughts ... Red captures the dynamic relationship between an artist and his creations."—New York Times
