Since its 1913 founding, Rockford Art Museum has acquired nearly 1,600 pieces of art, with a focus on developments of American art in the 19th and 20th centuries. Selections from the permanent collection clearly reflect these eras of unprecdented change.
The collection features a variety of contemporary and historic regional American art, Hudson River School, Impressionist, Taos, Chicago art, historic and contemporary photography, self-taught African American art of the Southeastern United States, Outsider art, and contemporary studio art glass. Following an article published in the American Art Review, Rockford Art Museum’s American painting and sculpture collection gained national exposure and respect. Community interest in the collection emerged in response to exhibitions such as The History of Art in Rockford 1850-2000, and American Views. .
